Emily Hayhurst

 32. This is picture of flower buds. Flower buds are the auxin producing area of a plant. Auxin is a hormone that promotes and regulate development and growth of plants. They especially help with root formation, bud growth, and fruit and leaf drop. Other examples of auxin producing area of a plant would be in the seeds, or a new leaf.

  33. You can see the cambium in this picture of a tree stomp. Cambium is the layer of actively dividing cells between the phloem and xylem tissues (the bark and the wood), and  is responsible for the secondary growth of stems and roots.

 34. A leaf of a pine tree is an example of gymnosperm leaf. Pine trees are in a specific group of gymnosperms called Conifers. They have cones to help them reproduce, instead of flowers and fruits. The seeds of the gymnosperm grow on the modified leaves of the plant, in a cone

  35. Olive oil and butter are both examples of lipids used for energy storage. Lipids are fat-soluble essential nutrient that is used for energy storage. There are 2 types of lipids: saturated and unsaturated. butter is an example of saturated (that's not so good for you) fat, and olive oil is an example of unsaturated (the natural) fat.

  36. This is a snowball bush in my grandparents' backyard. All plants, including this snowball bush, are autotrophs. Autotroph literary means "self-feeding", and they can make their own food.

  37. Territorial behavior is methods animals use to mark and protect their territory. It is used to prevent overcrowding in a population, for animals to mate without interruptions, and to raise the young in an area where there will be little competition for food. A birds nest is an example of a territorial behavior.

  38. The statue of liberty is made out of copper, and it turned green through galvanic corrosion overtime. Galvanic corrosion is an example if redox reaction. Redox reaction, short for reduction-oxidation reaction, involves oxidation(increase in oxidation number) and reduction(decrease in oxidation number), and are involved in many important processes like photosynthesis and cellular respiration.

Another example of redox reaction would be rust. Rust formed on this nail clipper that was left in the shower. In the process of rusting, the iron first lose electrons in presence of moisture, then the electrons are used to reduce the oxygen.

 39. The thorns on this flower plant is an example of adaptation of plants. Plants change over time to survive in the environment. This plant in the picture "adapted" to have thorns so less animals will eat it or even get close to it, thus there will be higher chance for them to survive and reproduce.

  40.  A starfish is an example of littoral zone organisms. Littoral zone (also called intertidal zone) is where the land and sea meet, between the high and low tide zones. A littoral zone organisms is organisms that lives there, along the coastlines worldwide.

  41.  Wings of chickens are one example of a vestigial structure. Vestigial structure is an organ or a part of body passed down, but reduced from the original ancestral form, and is no longer functional. They give a clue to the evolutionary history. Other examples of vestigial structure would be human appendix, tailbone, wisdom teeth, and us having goose bumps.

  42. Sand dollars are an example of organisms with radial symmetry. Organisms with radial symmetry can be cut through its central point anywhere in their body, and have two mirrored-imaged similar halves.
